In this article, you’ll learn how to manually register new wholesale customers or convert existing regular customers into wholesale customers through the Shopify dashboard.
Firstly, you need to check if the customer you are registering exists in the Shopify customer section or not.
Checking if a Customer Exists in Shopify
- In your Shopify admin, navigate to the Customers section.
- Click on the search bar.
Enter the customer's email in the search field to check if that customer exists or not.
There are two cases for registering as a wholesale customer manually, depending on whether the customer exists in the Shopify customer section or not.
If the customer does not exist in the Shopify customer section, then follow case #1.
Otherwise, follow case #2 if the customer exists in the Shopify customer section.
- Case # 1: If the customer does not exist in the Shopify customer section
- Case # 2: If the customer exists in the Shopify customer section
Case # 1: If the customer does not exist in the Shopify customer section
If the customer does not exist in the Shopify customer section then follow the below steps.
Steps:
In this method, the admin creates a new customer and sends an invitation to customers for a wholesale account.
Go to Customers > New Customer.
Then add customer details in form along with wholesale pricing tag and Save it.
Open the saved customer's details, and click on More actions. Then, select the Send account invite option. An email will be sent to the customer to activate their account.
Finally, the customer is redirected to the Activate Account page by clicking on the Activate your account button in the email. they will set up a new password here, and then their wholesale account will be activated.

Case # 2: If the customer exists in the Shopify customer section
If the customer exists in the Shopify customer section then follow the below steps.
In existing customers, you need to check their account status. Customer account statuses are usually of two types:
- Customer account with Has a legacy account status
- Customer account with Disabled Account (No account) status

Customer account with 'Has a legacy account' status
When a customer registers from the store's default account registration page, their account becomes active and shows the status Has a legacy account. Admin just needs to assign wholesale pricing tags to this type of customer profile.
Assigning tag:
Customer account with 'Disabled Account (No account)' status
When the customer account status is showing as Empty Space, you need to send an invite email to the customer to activate this account. Before sending an email, you also need to assign a wholesale pricing tag to this customer's profile.
